MONTGOMERY, AL – A select group of Master Instructors and two Master’s candidates from New York, Alabama, Florida, Virginia and Texas recently attended the 5th Annual Ko Dan Ja (Master’s Training) held by the United Tang Soo Do Association. This unique group of martial arts masters, men and women ranging in rank from 3rd to 7th degree black belt, came together on April 4 – 7, for advanced training. The four day event was by invitation only and included physical and mental training, networking and social time.
The event began on Thursday evening with a sparring classes at host Grandmaster Carole Smith’s school Family Karate Center. Sr. Master John Cannady lead the students in Tang Soo Do sparring techniques and was assisted by UTSDA Masters.
Friday was filled with day long advanced Black Belt training with GM Case, GM Smith and SIM Gary Horner leading high level Tang Soo Do forms, sparring and self defense techniques. In the evening the Masters participated in a Gup promotion exam at Smith’s Family Karate Center.
Saturday began with Master Chad Wynn leading the group in Tae Chi which is ancient circulatory, respiratory, and Ki-energy exercise for holistic health and well being. GM Case, GM Smith and SIM Horner provided advanced instruction in advanced techniques, forms, & weapons. GM Smith provided instruction on how to teach her “ASK MOM FIRST” program. The day also included group discussions on Tang Soo Do etiquette and “21st Century Curriculum”. A Ko Dan Ja Shim Sah (Master’s Exam) was held on Saturday night.
